Havering Sports Council revealed their 2011 award winners at Upminster Golf Club last night.

England under-17 international footballer Molly Bartrip won the Competitor of the Year prize and also helped Frances Bardsley win the Secondary School Team of the Year award.

Pentathlete Alex Law won the Junior Male competitor prize and saw Havering Mayesbrook win Club of the Year, while Romford Town swimmer Amy Marren claimed the Junior Female competitor award.

Ardleigh Green’s indoor athletics squad won the Primary School Team of the Year prize, while Jordan Sargeant claimed the Volunteer of the Year honours for his work as a tennis instructor.

Hornchurch’s Mike Brace CBE was honoured with the Doug Riden Lifetime Achievement award, having spent the last 50 years competing and working in a wide range of sports.

Blinded by a firework at the age of 10, Brace went on to complete two London marathons, two ski marathons and the 125-mile Devizes to Westminster canoe marathon.

He also represented Great Britain at the 1976 Winter Paralympics, in cross-country skiing, and six further Paralympic Games and has filled a range of roles in athletics, cricket, judo and tennis.
