Archant

Ben and Jules, the two founding members of Londonontheinside, share their insights into London and their inspiration behind starting a London-centric blog.

Q. Please tell us a little about yourselves.

A. Well hello there! We are Ben and Jules the two founding members of Londontheinside. Ben is 28 years old, by day he works in local government and by night he is a super blogger and guitar playing extraordinaire in an indie band called Ideals. He is obsessed with music and spends far too much money on boozing. Jules is 29 years old, by day she works in a luxury travel PR agency and by night she blogs for Londontheinside and can be seen moonlighting for other magazines and websites. She knows everything there is to know about London hotels, pop-up restaurants and dirty Dalston going-ons.

Q. What inspired you to be bloggers?

A. We want to share our love for London and all of the great things going on in the city. We'd often get alerted to a secret sample sale, a free food event, a new restaurant or hidden bar and we wanted to post it somewhere everyone could see it. Because the team behind Londontheinside all work in the industries we write about - for example Ben is in a band and I work in travel PR - we have an inside scoop, an in-depth knowledge and are genuinely passionate about the things we blog about. Plus as fellow Londoners wanting to get the most out of London we are effectively our audience so (hopefully) we know what our target readers want to read about.

Q. What do you blog about?

A. We write about the things we find interesting and anything which is weird, wonderful and downright insane. We champion new music in our Band of the Month feature as well as reviewing all things music (strictly indie and alternative). We blog about new restaurants, old restaurants, bars, art exhibitions, sample sales, hotels, pop-ups, salons and the odd bit of travel too. From the hippest trends and the coolest brands to industry secrets from our 'inside' expertise - we have it covered.

Q. How long have you been blogging?

A. We have been doing this seriously for over two years now, which has been enormously rewarding as well as extremely stressful - it really can be very hard work at times especially as we hold down full-time careers too. Between us we've contributed to some amazing articles, we have a monthly feature on the TimeOut blog and we were recently voted one of London's top five blogs by ELLE. A huge achievement!

Q. How would you describe your blogging style?

A. In one word - honest. We don't see the point of sugar coating things, if something is rubbish, pointless or boring we won't waste our time reviewing/writing an article on it. We're fairly level headed and know how hard it is in London for young people trying to live life and do interesting things on a rubbish wage, so we try to find the value for money in things for young 'creative' types like ourselves. Everyone wants to live like a rockstars don't they? We try to throw in our Northern sense of humour in there too, though its sometimes lost on our cockney friends down here.

Q. What inspired you to start a blog?

A. Same as above...

Q. Who are your favourite London bloggers?

A. We have to admit we tend to read the blogs of people we've met and liked in real life. Our favourites include About London, We Heart and Faerietale Foody and we're big fans of the Yin & Yang blog too.

Q. What does London mean to you?

A. London means all of our favourite things packaged up into one huge ball. It's music, eating, drinking, parties, pop-ups and it's constantly changing - it's a place where boredom cannot exist. A night out with friends where anything can happen, meeting new people that inspire and motivate you to really make a go of something. It's a place where you can be in the thick of the hustle bustle one minute or feel a millions miles away from the 'city stress' in the next step. It's constantly evolving, inspiring and challenging. It's a reminder to push yourself to make things happen.

Q. How would you describe London in 3 words?

A. Exciting, Vibrant, Sexy

Around 25 per cent of the population self-identity as having no religion yet still enjoy the fun of Christmas (Photo by Oli Scarff/Getty Images)

It’s Christmas time. We know this by the light-adorned streets, the mobility hazard posed by boxes of Quality Street, Roses and Celebrations in every supermarket’s entrance and, of course, the incessant radio-plays of Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You.
