A cat is campaigning to become mayor of a Canadian town in an attempt to raise awareness about the number of stray felines in the region.

The political puss, known as Tuxedo Stan, is running for mayor in the town of Halifax in Nova Scotia.

The feline campaigner even has a motto - “A chicken in every pot and a litter box in every house” - to go with his campaign.

Much to the concern of local councillors, Halifax residents have registered their support for Tuxedo Stan in their thousands on his Facebook page.

Waye Mason, Halifax councillor candidate, wrote on twitter: “I’m just glad I’m not running against Tuxedo Stan. He is everywhere these days.”
