It turns out you don’t need a Death Star to make a world explode, just a camera phone and an Instagram account as Darth Vader posted a ‘selfie’ on the Star Wars account and everything went into meltdown.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Swapping the force for wi-fi and a light-sabre for an iPhone, the Jedi took a snapshot of himself last night on what looks to be a spaceship and with fallen soldiers in the background.

It was the first picture on the Star Wars new Instagram page, which was announced via its Twitter account with a message telling followers to subscribe, adding: “It is useless to resist.”

Within 12 hours the page had 60,000 followers, and there are 20,000 likes for the Darth Vader picture, which was posted with the message: “Another day at the office. #StarWars #DarthVader #selfies #gpom.”

Last month the word ‘selfie’ was declared ‘Word of the Year’ for 2013 by Oxford Dictionaries, beating off ‘twerking’, after numerous celebrities and even thee Pope helped propel the self-taken photo into the cultural mainstream this year.

The next movie in the sci-fi franchise, Star Wars: Episode VII, begins shooting next year at Pinewood studios, and open auditions have been held in London.
