The Royal Observatory Greenwich has announced its shortlist for the 2013 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition - and the images are out of this world.
The shortlisted entries, which can be seen in the gallery linked on the right, have been split into four categories: Earth and Space; Our Solar System; Deep Space and Young Astronomer of the Year.
Cash prizes of £500, £250 and £125 will go to the top three entries in each category, with £1,500 going to the overall winner.
Judges will also award three special prizes: People and Space, for photos that include people in a creative and original way; Robotic Scope Image of the Year, for pictures taken using a special publically-accessible online telescope; and The Sir Patrick Moore prize for Best Newcomer.
Winning images in all categories will be revealed on September 19. They will then remain on show at the Royal Observatory Greenwich until February 23, 2014.
