Archant

This morning saw the clash London had been waiting for as Bob Crow phoned up Boris Johnson and the two heavyweights squared up over tonight’s Tube strikes live on the radio.

Here are the top quotes as the Mayor of London and the RMT leader exchanged pleasantries, accusations, clumsy metaphors and anger during a feisty chat on LBC’s monthly #AskBoris phone-in, which unsurprisingly resolved nothing:

Boris Johnson: “I can’t sit down and negotiate with you on air when you’re holding a gun to Londoners’ head and threatening disruption to the greatest city on earth.”

Bob Crow: “We’ve not come down to score any points, this is more important than that. We just want the opportunity to come and speak to the Mayor of London about the problems for Tube workers.”

Boris Johnson: “Ticket offices are old-fashioned technology, when I first started talking about them six years ago iPhones weren’t even invented yet.”

Bob Crow: “It’s an ultimatum by LUL (London Underground Limited); it’s like Henry Ford saying you can have any colour you want as long as it’s black.”

Boris Johnson: “The RMT, all they’re trying to do, as in some many debates of this kind, its really about muscle flexing and power. They have no chance of stopping this, it’s about showing their members and potential members that London Underground can’t make changes without this kind of industrial action.”

Bob Crow: “You keep telling us it’s an open door, but it’s a revolving door, we keep on coming out the same side we come in.”

Boris Johnson: “I urge you Bob, do the right thing for yourself, for your members, for London, and get round the table with Phil Hufton (London Underground’s Chief Operating Officer).”
