On board safety videos are as much a part of the flying experience as slight turbulence and questionable food.

But passengers on Air New Zealand flights have been greeted by an unexpected briefing before they take off - instructions from the cast of the upcoming Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey blockbuster.

Titled Hobbits, Dwarves and Wizards, the piece features cameos from director Peter Jackson, Gollum, and great grandsons of JRR Tolkien, author of The Hobbit novel.

Mike Tod, from Air New Zealand, said: “Sir Peter Jackson and the team at Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States were fantastically supportive during production of the video.

“To have Gollum step off the movie screen for the first time and into an Air New Zealand aircraft is incredibly special and Sir Peter Jackson delivers a superb cameo.

“He should come out from behind the camera more often.”

Viewers who spot hidden codes can visit www.airnzcode.com/hobbitmovie to be in to win a trip for two to New Zealand, including a tour of the Hobbiton movie set.

The movie will premiere in Wellington on November 28.
