Potter Grayson Perry says the art establishment is disengaged from the “real world”.

Perry, 51, who has curated an exhibition at the British Museum, said he gets most of his ideas “sitting in front of the telly with a beer, watching X Factor”.

The artist, who won the Turner Prize in 2003, and who has a female alter-ego, Claire, told the Radio Times: “The art world is not engaged with the real world.

“There is no popular wing to it. Who are the popular artists these days? Banksy. Jack Vettriano. Beryl Cook.

“You won’t find them hanging in the Tate. Almost because of the fact they are pop stars.”

Perry, whose vases depict subjects like death and child abuse, has previously poked fun at “boring cool people” in the art world.

He told an audience at the British Museum: “I have a pot called Boring Cool People. It’s decorated with pictures of the sort of people who go to ‘contemporary art galleries”’.

Perry has chosen almost 200 objects from the British Museum’s vast collection to go on show alongside his own work in the exhibition, called The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman.
