His honour, to be bestowed by Prince Charles, recognises his involvement in the House Of Illustration, a permanent museum and gallery for which he has pledged his entire archive, due to open in north London in 2014.

It also marks his work in brightening the lives of people in hospitals by creating specially-commissioned artworks.

Blake has provided his pictures for works by figures such as Joan Aiken and Michael Rosen and many viewers will recall the dozens of stories on the BBC series Jackanory for which he provided the on-screen illustrations.

Several gold medal winners from last year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games will be recognised during the Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony.

Britain’s LTA mixed coxed fours, who won Paralympic gold at London 2012, will be awarded MBEs for services to their sport.

The winning rowing team were David Smith, James Roe, Naomi Riches, Pam Relph and cox Lily van den Broecke.

Amateur boxer Anthony Joshua, who won super-heavyweight gold at the Olympics in London will also receive an MBE as will marksman Peter Wilson who claimed top honours in the double trap shooting competition.

Digital entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox will be made a CBE for services to the UK Digital Economy and to charity.

She co-founded co-founded lastminute.com in 1998 and is the Government’s UK Digital Champion.
