Clever and sharp-witted mother whose personality is summed up by her house in Provence, written by her daughter as she finally plucks up the courage to go back to it after her mother’s death. Reflecting on her life, Wells writes vividly not only about her complex feelings for her mother, but also about the ‘Swinging Sixties’ in London, peopling the pages with legendary names from her mother’s generation (Mary Quant, Iris Murdoch, George Melly) and those from her own, including her boyfriend at Oxford, Martin Amis, and the Provencal hairdresser to whom she surrendered her virginity.
