Henriques resting place now tourist spot for guide to Jewish London

The final resting place of one of the great philanthropists to the poor of London’s East End has become a tourist attraction to mark the publication of a book on a Jewish cemetery.

Sir Basil Henriques, founder of the Oxford & Cambridge boys’ club in Stepney who died in 1961, was buried at Hoop Lane in north London.

Now author Rachel Kolsky is running guided tours highlighting the cemetery’s history and the lives of those buried there for her book, ‘Hoop Lane Historic Jewish Cemetery’.

Henriques set up boys’ clubs for deprived immigrant children in the 1920s and 30s where they received education, vocational training, recreation and country holidays. Berner Street in Whitechapel was renamed Henriques Street in his honour.
