The greatest sci-fi film of all time has been voted for by movie buffs – and won by a film which flopped badly at cinemas.
Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford topped the poll by SFX magazine.
More than 10,000 votes were cast to decide the winner.
Blade Runner poses tough moral questions to viewers about what it means to be human, by pitching Ford’s assassin in a battle to destroy dangerous humanoid robots which have developed consciousness – and become scared of looming obsolescence.
The Empire Strikes Back - from the intergalatic Star Wars franchise - was denied its usual top spot - pushed down into second place.
Ridley Scott’s Aliens claimed third place. It’s prequel, Alien – a horror classic released in 1979 - ranked eighth in the list.
Hollywood legend says that when director James Cameron pitched the Alien sequel to sceptical movie executives, he convinced them to bankroll the project by writing the word ‘Alien’ on a board at a meeting – then added an ‘$’ on the end.
The rest as they say, is silver-screen history.
Aliens did not disappoint; pulling in cimena-goers with the all-action story of one female hero’s nightmare in space, blasting massed ranks of alien spawn and fighting to the death with the alien Queen.
Time travel classic Back to The Future also features in the top ten.
Hailing Blade Rubber, editor of the special edition Russell Lewin said: “This was a film that was both a commercial and critical failure when it was released in 1982.
“Since then, its reputation has slowly grown and grown. And no wonder - Ridley Scott’s film is a striking work. Full of ambiguity, with complex and fascinating themes, it has stunning visuals that have been influencing sci-fi movies ever since, and rewards the viewer the more they watch it.”
The top 10 is:
1. Blade Runner
2. The Empire Strikes Back
4. Star Wars
5. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
6. The Matrix
9. Back To The Future
10. The Dark Knight
