Like football to some, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception qualifies as the beautiful game.

The witty and at times touching character interaction, the rich plot, outstanding visuals and moody music and sound. They all come together perfectly to make a wonderful experience.

Drake and Sully are back and better than ever.

First off, an intro to the game for those of you who haven’t played the previous two games.

“Follow Nathan Drake on his most perilous adventure yet: an epic fortune-hunting journey across Europe and into the Middle East, following in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia. Blast into blockbuster action full of tense drama, gripping storytelling and big-screen stunts and get stuck in to the all-new online mutliplayer” - courtesy of the manufacturer’s description on Amazon :).

In short, lots of climby type acrobatics and shooty bad guys. Think Tomb Raider with a bloke and you wouldn’t be half wrong - except that this is by far better than any of the Tomb Raider games ever were.

The graphics

Wow, just wow. From the boat stage to the fight onboard the cargo plane, believe me when I say you have never seen anything as good as this before on the PS3. The procedural ocean alone is a testament to how far we have come technologically and the water physics are awesome to behold.

Music and sound

To just say ‘atmospheric’ doesn’t do the game justice, Naughty Dog has gone beyond the call of duty to deliver audio that helps both the plot and the action along..

The controls

At times a little too fiddly and responsible for more than a few of my demises but nothing that ruins the game.

The melee system has changed a little and adds a lot of variety to what would otherwise be just a bout of manic button pressing. The change is a good thing.

Shooting is standard fair. You can either shoot from the hip or bring up an aim reticule on an over-the-shoulder view. Think Resident Evil-type shooting controls. The ability to throw back grenades can turn the tide against otherwise overwhelming odds and is a great addition to the series.

Score: 10 out of 10

OVERALL: This and Batman Arkham City (which I consider the only other game to be worthy of a 10 scoring) have made 2011 a great year for gaming on the PS3 and if I was in a shop right now and had to choose between them I would have a really hard time. I would have to dig deep and buy both.
