The world’s largest videogame controller, 30 times the size of a standard NES joypad, was unveiled at London’s Liverpool Street station

The world’s largest videogame controller was unveiled at London’s Liverpool Street station to celebrate the launch or the Guinness World Records Gamers Edition 2012..

Based on an old Nintendo NES joypad, the controller measures 12 feet by six feet and weighs 265 pounds.

If you wanted to use it like a standard handheld pad, you would need to be 51 metres (167ft) tall – the same height as Nelson’s Column!

Such is the size of the controller that it requires at least two gamers to press the buttons - or jump on them - which communicates with a standard console.

Engineering student Ben Allen, 23, created the device as part of a university project.

It took five months to make at an estimated cost of £4,000.

Also present at the London launch event for the Guinness World Records Gamers book were British record holders Ryan Hart (most international street fighter competition wins, more than 450) and south Londoner Sami Cetin, a Super Mario Kart professional player who holds the record for the fastest completion of Mario Kart (56.45 seconds for five laps on Mario Circuit 1).

Other standout records celebrated this year include the longest videogame marathon, held by Belgians Tony Desmet, Jesse Rebmann and Jeffrey Gammon who played Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood for 109 hours.

In another feat of endurance 6ft 5in 265lb Jesse Moerkerk from the Netherlands set a new record for the longest gaming session in free-fall. Suspended in a wind-tunnel, he played Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Nintendo Wii for 18 minutes and 52 seconds.

Actress Helen Mirren is recognised for the highest fee paid for a videogame advert appearance following the 2010 Wii Fit adverts for which she was paid a reported £500,000.
