Former X Factor winner Leona Lewis has told contestants that crying on stage could help them win.

The ‘Bleeding Love’ singer -who was crowned the winner of the ITV competition in 2006 - has advised this year’s contestants to get in touch with their emotions and show their vulnerable side by shedding a few tears live on TV.

She said: “Remember it’s OK to be emotional. I cried every week on the show.

“Some people were like, ‘You’re too this’ or ‘You’re too that’, but I’m good with me and I’m good with how I react to things - it just makes me who I am.

“If you get criticised you 100 per cent get upset, but that’s just natural. If it’s positive criticism that’s fine, and if it’s negative you just have to ignore it. Don’t take it personally.”

The softly-spoken pop star thinks confident acts like Rylan Clark shouldn’t get too cocky and she warned that no one likes a big ego and has warned the acts that they will need to work harder than ever before if they want a shot at winning.

Leona told We Love Pop magazine: “Never get a big head. There’s nothing worse than an ego.”

She added: “Find a balance between work and your personal life. Be prepared to work harder than ever.”
