Massive Mercury Music revamp unveiled

16:45 22 May 2012

The prestigious Mercury Music Prize has a new home – at the iconic Roundhouse in north London.

The prize will relocate from its base of many years at the Grosvenor House Ballroom.

A new venue is just one of three big changes to the high-profile award, won last year by PJ Harvey.

This year’s Prize ceremony will take place on November 1, not in September - its traditional slot.

That means nominations will be announced two months later than usual, on September 12.

Channel 4 will take over broadcasting the event from the BBC, under the terms of a three year deal.

Artists in line for the gong will be invited to play preview gigs to showcase their album.

Dan Ford, managing director of the prize, hailed the revamp. He said: “By providing access to a whole season of Barclaycard Mercury Prize live events, broadcast coverage and online content, we will be able to help even more people discover and experience the amazing range of new music that comes out of the UK every year - generating more interest in the shortlisted artists and albums than ever before.”

Previous winners of the prize include M People, Portishead, The Klaxons, and drum ‘n’ bass artist; Roni Size.
