Sir Peter Blake, the artist behind The Beatles' Sgt Pepper sleeve, has been commissioned to design the Brit Awards trophy for 2012

Londoner and acclaimed pop artist Sir Peter Blake has a new project on his hands – redesigning the Brit Awards trophy for next year.

The man behind the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper album sleeve has been commissioned to put his mark on the Britannia statuettes which will be handed to prize-winners at the awards bash in February at The O2.

He follows Dame Vivienne Westwood who designed the trophy for this year’s ceremony.

Chelsea fan Sir Peter, who lives in Chiswick, is well known for his musical links. As well as his famous collage cover of 1967 Beatles classic Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, he was behind Paul Weller’s Stanley Road and Oasis’s Stop The Clocks.

Sir Peter was also the tutor of singer Ian Dury when he was an art student.

Brits organisers are treating the trophy as a “blank canvas” and are asking prominent figures each year to add their own design.

Sir Peter, 79, said: “It is wonderful to be a part of this most important and exciting music event, honouring the greatest of talents shaping our musical landscape. I’ve enjoyed the creative challenge to honour such leading performers enormously.”

Brits chairman David Joseph said: “We feel hugely honoured that Sir Peter Blake accepted the challenge of designing the trophy this year - the result is incredible.

“Having created possibly the world’s most iconic album sleeve with the Beatles, Sir Peter’s work is synonymous with the best of British music.”
