The 76-year-old, who famously held The Beatles off number one in 1967, was chosen by the BBC to take part in the annual contest, which has been going since 1956.

Last year Britain were represented by Blue. The boyband finished 11th, behind Ireland’s Jedward - who are due to take part again this year.

“I’m excited and raring to go,” Humperdinck said.

His hits include Release Me and The Last Waltz.

The Eurovision song, Love Will Set You Free, has been written by Sacha Skarbek, who teamed up with James Blunt to compose his global hit You’re Beautiful.
