“You know we love playing here because you guys are so close. I can smell your BO. Oh wait that’s mine,” joked frontman Stu Block.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Iced Earth play fist pumping metal that is well suited to outdoor festivals or arenas.

The small Camden Underworld, with its poor sound quality, was not even the first choice venue for Thursday night’s gig, which was originally scheduled to be at the nearby Electric Ballroom.

The venue was full-to-bursting with fans of the veteran metallers, who did their best in spite of the venue’s built-in opposition.

During a set which spanned the band’s career, Block showed that his vocal range is nothing short of spectacular.

He sang his many vocal predecessor’s tunes expertly, as well as delivering his own recent recordings with aplomb.

The band as a whole, led by the group’s driving force, guitarist Jon Schaffer, did their best to get the crowd going.

Standards like Burning Times and the eponymous Iced Earth were greeted with huge cheers from inside the sweaty cauldron.

But Block surely overstated it when describing the audience as one of the most energetic the band had seen – despite Iced Earth’s best efforts, pillars which render parts of the front of the stage out-of-bands are rarely going to allow for that.
