Emeli Sande’s debut album has overtaken Adele’s 21 to become the biggest selling album of 2012 so far.
Sande performed at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games. Her performance of Abide With Me accompanied a dance tribute to lost loved ones in Danny Boyle’s opening show, and she sang Read All About It in the closing show.
Her album Our Version of Events has now sold more than 659,800 copies since its release, according to the Official Charts Company. Sales increased 33.3 per cent month-on-month since the start of the Olympic Games.
North London-born Adele’s 21 is now the second biggest selling of 2012, trailing Our Version of Events by 3,200 copies.
Martin Talbot, the Official Charts Company’s managing director, said: “At a time when it is as hard as ever for new artists to break through, it is fantastic that Emeli Sande now has the official biggest selling album of 2012 so far.
“It is also apt that Emeli (who won the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award in February) should take over from the inaugural BRITs Critics’ Choice Award winner, Adele. Yet another British female singing star has been born.”
Since its release, 21 has sold 4.4million copies in the UK, making it the fifth biggest-selling album of all-time.
