Under-fire Dagenham celebrity Stacey Solomon has been defended in the storm over snaps of her smoking while pregnant - by Kerry Katona; whose own battles with personal demons made her a reality star of car-crash telly.

Katona stepped into row over X-Factor star Solomon lighting up while only eight weeks away from giving birth; insisting it is okay as long as the puffs low-tar fags.

Stacey, the face of the supermarket Iceland, was stripped of her Mum of the year title when the pictures were published.

Katona, who is a mother, said the stress caused by the media storm was more harmful than smoking.

And in her column for OK! magazine she claimed: “There’s no harm having the odd puff now and then.

Katona claimed doctors advised her that she would be fine smoking “the odd one”, because stressing about it would be even more damaging.

“And she only smokes Silk Cut which aren’t even like having a cigarettes because you have to puff so hard,” she added.

Katona, who says she has suffered from bipolar disorder and has had drug problems, said it would be common for women in the past to smoke and drink throughout their pregnancies.

“My mum smoked all the way through her pregnancy with me and I turned out in the best of health,” she wrote.

Undated handout photo issued by Battersea Dogs & Cats Home of Bless with Geoff and Sylvia Shoesmith, of Chelmsford, Essex. The mournful-looking stray which was thought to be putting potential adopters off with her hangdog expression has finally found a home. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Issue date: Wednesday August 27, 2014. Bless was the most long-term resident at Battersea, with staff believing the lack of interest was down to the doleful dog's permanently sad expression. But following publicity, the Shoesmiths leapt at the chance to take the six-year-old in after being drawn to her loving personality and calm, kindly temperament. See PA story ANIMALS Sad.
