Actor Adrian Lester, who starred in Hustle, said he accepted his OBE for services to drama on behalf of several generations of his family.

The 44-year-old, who was born in Birmingham to parents originally from Jamaica, has carved out a career on stage and screen since graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.

Lester said he was “really surprised” but “honoured” when he was told about the award.

He said: “Coming from my background there was always this ethic that is very strong that people would do their best for the mother country.

“It is a strong part of the culture in Jamaica, for better or worse, and one of the things I thought was that without the contributions of people like my great-grandparents, my grandparents and parents to this country it wouldn’t be what it is.”

Lester, who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of conman Mickey Bricks in the BBC show Hustle, has had a successful stage career making regular appearances at the National Theatre.

The actor, who has two daughters with his wife, the actress and playwright Lolita Chakrabarti, said he had not decided who he was going to take to the palace to accept the honour but said his mother “would get the biggest buzz out of it”.
