Some of the world’s most stylish people will be descending on London today as London Fashion Week kicks off.
Designers, models and fashionistas from all over the world are expected to attend the event, which runs until Tuesday.
Highlights are expected to include British favourites Burberry, Vivienne Westwood and Temperley London as well as American designers Tom Ford and Mick Jagger’s girlfriend L’Wren Scott, who will all showcase their autumn/winter 2013 designs.
Superstar Rihanna will debut her collaboration with high street shop River Island, while Victoria Beckham will be in town to judge a wool design competition alongside fashion heavyweights Donatella Versace and Diane Von Furstenberg.
Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council (BFC), said people could expect both new talent and veteran designers displaying their wares - not to mention a whole host of glittering star-studded parties.
She credits London with being “one of the most creative capitals in the world” and also “one of the most culturally diverse”.
Ms Rush said: “These qualities, mixed with the inventiveness and individuality that’s so inherently British gives London an undeniable edge that sets it apart from any other city.
“London Fashion Week is vitally important, not only to the fashion industry but also to the British economy.
“It’s the UK’s essential showcasing platform of fashion talent that allows our British designers and the industry as a whole to be recognised by a global audience.
“Each season sees the value of orders placed in London stand at over £100 million, and the event itself generates over £130 million in media value in the UK alone.”
Organisers are hoping for a considerable US audience as Tom Ford leads a host of key buyers from across the Atlantic.
Those expected to be taking front row seats include representatives from department stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s and Saks 5th Avenue, while Ms Rush described the overseas interest as “unprecedented”.
She said: “It’s the combination of iconic international brands alongside London’s outstanding new designer businesses that makes London Fashion Week the most unique and exciting of the international fashion weeks.
“We have so much talent here showing over five days making it virtually impossible to miss a show.”
The main venue for London Fashion Week is Somerset House, where many of the week’s 56 catwalk shows and 20 presentations will take place.
As well as the catwalk shows, an exhibition at Somerset House will feature more than 120 designer brands showcasing their autumn/winter 2013 collections.
