The Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting director has teamed up with Underworld’s Rick Smith and chart topper Emeli Sande for the soundtrack of his new film, Trance.

Smith, who oversaw the music for the Olympic ceremony, has written and recorded the original score for the psychological thriller, while Double Brit Award winner Sande, who performed at London 2012, sings on and has co-written one of the tracks.

Trance, which stars James McAvoy, is the story of a fine art auctioneer and a criminal gang who join forces with a hypnotherapist to recover a lost painting.

The film will be Oscar-winner Boyle’s first since 127 Hours in 2010, the true story of a mountain climber’s battle to survive after he becomes trapped in a canyon.

The vocals of actress Rosario Dawson, who began dating Boyle after she was also cast in Trance, can also be heard on one of the songs.

Sande said: “It was wonderful to work with Rick again after the amazing time I had with him putting together the track for the opening ceremony at the Olympics.

“I was honoured to be asked to collaborate with him again for the film and, with his help, I believe we have created something very special.”

Boyle said: “Trance reaches back to the darker more anarchic spirit of films like Trainspotting on which Rick was a key collaborator.”
