Fourteen stars will battle it out on the dance floor to be named BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing Champion 2012, and there are more than a few faces used to winning in this year’s line up.

Pictures of the contestants all dressed up for the competition have been released by the BBC.

Cyclist Victoria Pendleton, who won one gold and one silver at this year’s Olympics, has only just put her bicycle away after retiring from the sport, but has swapped training for the Games with training for Strictly. Her purple miriff-baring dress shows off her toned athlete’s body.

Fellow Olympian Louis Smith sports a red shirt and black trousers, complete with braces. He won an individual silver and a team bronze in the gymnastics, and may find his strength and flexibility from his sport coming in useful in the BBC competition.

Former cricketer Michael Vaughan saw success in his sporting career, but also has to live up to the achievements of cricketers who have previously competed on the show.

Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash both won Strictly when they appeared on the programme.

The world of music is represented by Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud, who sports a glamarous red dress with cut outs for the promotional pictures. She appeared as Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical in the West End this year.

Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, who wear a simple black suit with diamonte detail on the lapels, will have to get used to doing more than swaying on a chair during the competition.

Johnny Ball has a lot to live up to - not only is he the oldest competitor this year at the age of 74, but his daughter Zoe Ball came third when she appeared on Strictly in 2005.

Sid Owen, in a red and black bolero, is famous for playing Ricky Butcher on Eastenders opposite Patsy Palmer as Bianca. Palmer appeared on Strictly’s third series.

Daybreak’s Richard Palmer wears an off-white jacket with black lapels, over a light pink shirt.

There are a number of actresses in this year’s line-up.

American model and actress Jerry Hall, who had a long-term relationship with Mick Jagger, wears a glamorous blue dress.

Dani Harmer, famous for playing Tracey Beaker on children’s television, is one of the youngest contestants this year and is seen wearing a peach fringed outfit.

Former Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley wears bright pink.

Television presenter and actress Denise van Outen, who previously sat on the judging panel of Any Dream Will Do on the BBC, will have to get used to being on the other side of the judging panel during her time on Strictly. She wears a blue fringed outfit.

Television presenter Fern Britton, in dark blue, will have an advantage over fellow contestants as she competed on the Christmas special of the show in 2010.

Colin Salmon, who played Charles Robinson, head of MI6 in the James Bond films Die Another Day, The World is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies, completes the line up.

The three regular male judges - Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood - are joined by new female judge and former prima ballerina Darcey Bussell, who replaces Alesha Dixon, who left the programme to join ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent.

Strictly will be helmed as usual by Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly, with Claudia Winkleman taking on presenting duties alongisde Daly for the results show.
