Spitalfields Life

A ‘selling’ exhibition of daily life in London’s East End opens this-evening (Weds) where pictures on show can be bought and taken away immediately before they’re replaced by other works.

Photographers, artists and craftsmen commissioned by the Gentle Author for his daily ‘Spitalfields Life’ website are on show for three weeks at Ben Pentreath’s art shop in Bloomsbury.

They include photographs, prints, maps, delft tiles, bottletop pictures, paintings, wildlife sculptures, graphics, drawings, papercuts, curios, knick-knacks and even loganberry jam by too many contributors to name them all.

The Gentle Author began his Spitalfields Life website three years ago with a pledge to write up a new story about the people of Spitalfields for 10,000 days. He’s not even a quarter of the way through—but has a backlog of folk who have come forward with tales of Spitalfields or suggesting who the anonymous author can approach for a good yarn.

He has been publishing the stories of the contributors themselves who are being featured in the ‘Artists of Spitalfields Life’ exhibition, which runs daily until November 24 at Ben Pentreath’s, 17 Rugby Street, Bloomsbury (10 minutes from Chancery Lane Underground station on the Central Line).
