Olympic silver medallist Louis Smith reckons training for Strictly Come Dancing has worked out tougher than preparing for London 2012.

The gymnast also insisted his athletic background doesn’t give him an unfair advantage over his competitors.

Speaking at the Cosmopolitan Ultimate Women of the Year Awards 2012 with VO5 on Tuesday, Louis said his routines were “very tough”

He said: “I find training for ‘Strictly’ is harder than training for the Olympic Games.

Being a gymnast might not be an advantage, but it allows me to add in a few extra bits to the routine that perhaps normal people can’t do.

“I don’t want to put somersaults or stuff in because it takes away from the competition, it’s not right. I think where possible we’ll add a few tricks to make people go, ‘Ooh that’s cool!’ Me and Flavia (Cacace) have a few things planned if we make it further on the show.”

Louis - who picked up the Ultimate Hottie gong at the star-studded event - apologised for his slip-up on Saturday when he tweeted that Sid Owen had been axed from the show before the results were announced and has vowed to be more careful in future.

He explained: “I didn’t get into trouble, they kindly said, ‘Mistakes happen and it’s happened before in the past’.

“It’s just about trying to preserve the excitement for the next day. It was a mistake on my behalf and they said not to worry about it, but I certainly won’t let it happen again.”

Louis was also keen to crush rumours he secretly fancies Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh and revealed he’s been out drinking with her boyfriend Justin Scott.
