East will battle west as London acts vie for this year’s Christmas number one single, with The Wombles of Wimbledon Common taking on The Only Way Is Essex.

Everyone’s favourite eco-warriors The Wombles are 7/1 to be top of the pops this festive season with their Wombling Merry Christmas song.

Among their rivals for the chart summit is the cast of ITV2’s un-reality show The Only Way Is Essex.

An undoubtedly hideous version of the already awful Wham! hit Last Christmas is being released, and TOWIE’s effort is being given the same odds as The Wombles.

If you thought it couldn’t get any worse than TOWIE think again because Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber have collaborated on All I Want For Christmas Is You, which is also 7/1 with bookmakers.

Another fancied contender is Arianna Morgan, a 10-year-old from Essex, whose cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Songbird is ranked at 8/1.

Among the other London artists thought to be in contention are Amy Winehouse (8/1) and Adele (14/1).

All of these hoping to take the Christmas number one could be blown out of the water by two other strong challengers.

The yet-to-be-decided winner of ITV1 ‘talent’ show The X Factor is favourite - as in most years – at 1/3.

The closest rival could be another anti-X Factor internet campaign which hopes to repeat the success of Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name pipping Joe McElderry to the top spot in 2009.

This year fans of American grunge band Nirvana – along with anyone who hates The X Factor – is being urged to buy the band’s 20-year-old hit Smells Like Teen Spirit.

It currently has odds of 5/1.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “The X Factor has had a profound effect on what has traditionally been the country’s favourite festive flutter.

“That said, the X Factor winner no longer looks unbeatable, we have seen good money for Nirvana and the cast of The Only Way Is Essex but my money is on Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber at 7/1.”

Amy Winehouse and manufactured boyband One Direction are said to be the favourites for the number one slot in the Christmas album charts.

Tell us what you think. What song would you like to see get Christmas number one this year? Does anyone else stand a chance against X Factor? Does the Christmas chart-topper mean as much as it did in years gone by? Add your comments below and vote in our poll.
