Surprising because the story concerns the desperate survival strategies of the 3,000 inhabitants of Annawadi, a Mumbai slum located next to an open sewer on land reclaimed during the building of the new airport in the 1990s. Their lives are as wretched as those of the rats infesting their shacks.
