It’s the same every year – weeks of anticipation, fevered planning, massive expense – and then it’s the same old disappointment come New Year’s Eve. Well not this time, with our guide to the coolest alternative events to ring in 2015 in London:

The cast of The Gruffalo's Child on stage

The Gruffalo and Gruffalo’s Child, as with many of Julia Donaldson’s children’s books, are etched on the brains of most parents whose toddlers have fallen under the spell of these endearing tales of a mouse who twice triumphs in woodland that is home to a mysterious creature known as the Gruffalo.

Tue, 13:08
St James' Court, A Taj Hotel Lobby

With the run up to New Year well under way, using up those last days of holiday to jet off somewhere warm may be impossible - with limited time to plan and spiralling Christmas prices. But, though the next few months may be cold and dreary, there is no other city quite like ours and taking steps to enjoy it is easier than you think.

Surprisingly, Sir David Hare’s new play at the National Theatre, Behind The Beautiful Forevers, makes for a very pleasing evening out. Surprising because the story concerns the desperate survival strategies of the 3,000 inhabitants of Annawadi, a Mumbai slum located next to an open sewer on land reclaimed during the building of the new airport in the 1990s. Their lives are as wretched as those of the rats infesting their shacks.

Sara with a Galapagos giant tortoise at London Zoo

Kitted out in blue overalls and spade in hand I’m ready to shovel some poo. This might not sound like much fun but the poo in question is rather exotic - it came from a group of zebras.

Fried chicken at Brooklyn Bowl comes with honey

Despite the influx of American-themed cuisine reaching our shores in the past few years, nowhere will you get a dining experience quite like Brooklyn Bowl. The vast O2 space somehow manages to be a state-of-the-art bowling alley, live music venue and justifiable restaurant, all at the same time.
