A giant rat has terrified a Swedish family and even their cat after it made itself at home in their kitchen.
The family took these incredible photos to show off the 40 cm-long rodent – and that’s not including its tail!
“We thought it could be a little mouse, but after a while we figured it couldn’t be because it was making too much noise,” mother Signe Bengtsson told an English-language newspaper.
“It was right there in our rubbish bin, a mighty monster. I was petrified.
“I couldn’t believe such a big rat could exist,” she said.
At nearly 16 inches long, the rat was around the size of an average computer keyboard, or easily the same size as a cat, Chihuahua, or Jack Russell terrier.
‘Ratzilla’ gnawed his way through wood and concrete to get into the family home in the Solna district of Stockholm.
It feasted on the leftovers in their bin and even left Enok, the family cat too scared to go into the kitchen.
The family called in pest controllers, but their heavy-duty traps were not big enough to deal with the beast. After it was left injured but still breathing by one of the devices, it fell to the family’s sons, 13-year-old Justus and six-year-old Laurentius, to track it down and put it out of its misery.
Their father Erik Korsås said that “The kids were afraid it would come back to life as some sort of zombie rat.”
A grandfather from County Durham found a rat on his farm that was four feet long in 2012, and killed it with a piece of wood.
