Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton hailed by Salma Hayek at London Fashion Week

Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen who designed the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, has been hailed as “unforgettable and extraordinary” by Hollywood actress Salma Hayek at London Fashion Week.

The brand, which counts Emma Watson, Chloe Moretz and Rihanna as fans, presented its autumn/winter collection at the Old Sorting Office in central London. Burton also oversees the McQ range.
Hayek who attended the show with her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, who is head of luxury fashion conglomerate PPR, said: “The show was truly sensational - really, really amazing - not at all what I was expecting.
“The clothes were already unforgettable and extraordinary.
“Sarah Burton set the bar really high - it makes me nervous it is so good. What is she going to do for McQueen now?
“It was so mind-blowingly extraordinary - every single piece - and very wearable - stuff we can all wear.”
The range included military-inspired garments, a fusion of leather and faux-fur, peplum skirts and decadent velvet gowns.
One male model donned a blue kilt - a possible tribute to the late founder of the label Alexander McQueen who frequently wore them.
The show, which featured both womenswear and menswear ended dramatically as a female model stalked down the leaf-strewn catwalk wearing a white lace-applique wedding dress.
The model bent down and picked up a rope and pulled herself through a forest which was revealed at the back of the catwalk. She entered a small house, which Hayek said symbolised Burton being “at home” in London.
Burton, dressed in jeans and a black jumper, briefly came out on to the catwalk at the end of the show to rapturous applause from the crowd.
