For Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry, Kate Moss and co the “Croydon Facelift” is a favourite hairstyle that’s both chic and anti-ageing.

But scientists have shown that the scraped-back-style can permanently damage the hair and scalp, recommending that women avoid the look if they like their locks.

Researchers from the Univeristy of Texas found that the hairstyle, coined the “Croydon Facelift” after perhaps its most famous fan Kate Moss, who is from the south London town, led to hair loss from the root itself.

Their report found that slick up ‘do, known in Essex as the “Dagenham Facelift”, puts too much “structural” pressure on the root of the hair which can cause lasting damage.

Dr Josephine Quintanilla–Dieck, who led the research at the Southwestern Medial Centre, said: “Pulling hair into tight ponytails or braids can lead to structural damage of the hair shaft as well as thermal and chemical damage to the skin of the scalp.

“Although usually reversible, hair loss occasionally can be permanent with long–standing or severe cases.”

She also warned that other styling tools such as curling tongs and straighteners could damage the hair, suggesting that women take regular “hair holidays” to wear more natural looks.

Dr Quintanilla–Dieck added: “Regular and sometimes even occasional use of these hair techniques may lead to hair breakage and hair loss from the root.

“If you do use chemical relaxers or heating devices, you can reduce the risk of damage by using them infrequently or incorporating “hair holidays” – styling free days that allow for natural recovery.”
