Ms Westwood, dressed in her usual wacky style with an image of Julian Assange on her T-shirt, said today’s Red Label collection also carried the theme of quality over quantity.

She said: “It’s for anybody that wants to dress up quite wonderfully glamorous.

“All I can say is it’s quite a short collection this time because what I’m trying to aim for in my second line and all my offshoot products is to just keep aiming for quality all the time and have less quantity.

“I’m just trying to do a quality choice for people to wear something that really helps them to look good.

“That’s what fashion is here for. It’s here to help,” she said.

“Fabulous”

The show was attended by Fashion Week regulars Peaches Geldof and Jodie Kidd, and after the show Miss Kidd was full of praise for what Ms Westwood had to offer.

She said: “I thought it was brilliant and I just loved the combination of the colours, the tights, the clothes, the shoes, the bags, the tailoring.

“I just wanted absolutely every single piece, which is very rare for me. I just loved this collection. I thought it was fabulous.”

Yesterday fashion superstars John Rocha, Julien Macdonald and Jasper Conran all showed off their new designs - along with fashion newcomer, musician Rihanna, who hoped the “fashion gods” would smile benevolently upon her collection for retailer River Island.

At Goldsmiths’ Hall Julien Macdonald’s Las Vegas-inspired showcase was watched by pop stars Pixie Lott and The Saturdays.

The Viva Las Vegas theme was set off by stomping music, messy partied out hair and a theatrical ending with loud bangs and golden confetti bursting from the ceiling.

After lapping up the applause, he said backstage: “Last year I went to Las Vegas. I went there and I had an amazing time.

“And what I loved about it was that everyone dressed up. People party night and day. They dress up, they forget their troubles.

“I thought ‘You know what? I’m going to call my show Viva Las Vegas’. All the buildings, all the neon, all the glitz and glamour.”

‘Raunchy’

Spice Girl-turned fashion giant Victoria Beckham helped judge the International Woolmark Prize which celebrates designs made from wool - a fabric that she has described as “one of the most special of all materials”.

Speaking ahead of the contest, which was won by Christian Wijnants from Belgium, she said: “The versatility of wool together with all its familiar as well as fashion connotations makes it one of the most special of all materials.”

One of the most anticipated events of London Fashion Week was music star Rihanna’s show, at the Old Sorting Office.

The music superstar swapped a catwalk for a stage separated into compartments which the models moved between to the sound of loud hip hop music.

The clothes on offer were of a raunchy street-style theme - with bra tops, dresses slashed to the thigh, tummy-baring tank tops and thigh-high boots.

Rihanna finally came out at the end to give the designer’s customary bow and was dressed in a short black dress, sparking necklace and plenty of bracelets.
