Dane’s Yard Kitchen, which has an unusual 40m illuminated wooden sculpture in its courtyard, is a colourful addition to both the Stratford skyline and restaurant market which are otherwise dominated by Westfield.

The open plan bar, eating space and kitchen is perfect for large groups and alfresco dining in the summer months.

The varied and generous menu offers traditional options as well as something for those who are feeling more daring, and smaller plates perfect for sharing.

After grabbing a seat in one of the large leather booths, my friend ordered the unexpectedly spicy, devilled lamb’s kidney on toast, while I plumped for the pea and mint soup, both of which were very generous in size.

Next arrived the large, short rib beef burger served on a wooden plank with chips, while I had the Wicks Manor pork belly, which was perfectly cooked.

My friend, who considers himself a bit of burger connoisseur, struggled to finish his main before telling me it was one of the best burgers he’d had.

Also on offer was sea bass fillet with sautéed Swiss chard, corn fed chicken breast with roasted garlic and salmon and cod fishcake, which I was told by our server was her favourite.

Despite being extremely full after leaving very little room for dessert, we decided to share the raspberry bread and butter pudding which we both thought was the highlight of the meal.

Although the menu was nothing out of the ordinary, everything was cooked flawlessly and the portion sizes are perfect for those with a big appetite.

The restaurant’s canal-side position, along with an extensive brunch menu served on Saturdays and Sundays, make it the ideal weekend restaurant, even if you have the fussiest of guests.
