From the outside, it’s hard to see why The Gun needs another restaurant review. The Docklands restaurant is described by Time Out as having one of the best views in London, and it’s hard not to agree with that assessment.

At the back of the restaurant is a balcony which overlooks the Thames, with the O2 Arena on the other side. In Winter you get a great view of London lit up, under temporary cover. That’s stripped away in the summer and I imagine it’s a great place to go for after work drinks.

On the inside, it becomes even harder to ascertain the need for a review.

The food, service and atmosphere were all absolutely exquisite. The service we received from our waitress, Ilvia, was constant and she attended our every need throughout the night with a smile on her face.

Starting with a baked goat’s cheese crotin was an excellent way to set up the evening.

The Gressingham duck was cooked rare, along with roast potatoes and pork stuffing. A wonderful alternative roast dinner and the seasoning was just right. When sitting down for a nice meal such as this I always think it’s a good idea to have something I wouldn’t make for myself at home and this would certainly have been outside my capabilities. My friend had the 35 day aged Black Angus rib-eye steak was soft, tender and juicy.

They saved the best until last though. My dark and milk chocolate terrine with Bailey’s and praline cream was rich and creamy, while my friend’s creme brulee was burned to perfection. All of the food was presented impeccably.

Along with the restaurant The Gun has a nice pub feel to it with a number of function rooms. To find out more about Christmas and New Year celebrations, visit the website.

While the gastropub is a little off the beaten path in the Isle of Dogs, I would recommend it to anyone who likes good food and great scenery. And go for a drink on the terrace after finishing your meal. A great way to end the night.

Main courses: from £13.50.

Wine: from £16.50 a bottle.
