Are you going to be cooking the turkey for Christmas dinner, but you have no idea where to start?

Research by Asda shows that nearly three in five Brits attempt to cook their first festive meal at the age of 24, but that it takes the average Brit 12 years to perfect their Christmas dinner cooking skills.

Perhaps because it can prove difficult, one in 10 Brits will never attempt to cook a Christmas roast.

Making sure the meat is cooked to perfection is the most problematic part of the dinner for over a third of would-be chefs, while almost one in five people admit to having bought their main Christmas meat without checking whether it will fit in their oven first.

Television chefs inspire 47 per cent of cooks, but only four per cent of those questioned said celebrity chefs had made them better cooks.

Jum Viggars, Asda’s head of meat quality, who has made a video giving tips on cooking the perfect turkey, said: “The highlight of many people’s Christmas Day is the food.

“But cooking the Christmas dinner shouldn’t give you beef; the trick to avoid stuffing up is plenty of preparation.

“Use the days and weeks ahead of December 25 to perfect each individual part, so you’re not panicking on the day. And, if it doesn’t go to plan on the big day don’t worry, there’s always next year.”
