Slow, painful death by disease or watching the love of your life die a slow, painful death by disease?

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The above question forms a central part of Friends With Kids, which should clue you in to the fact that the film is not a normal romantic comedy.

When best friends Jason (Adam Scott) and Julie (Jennifer Westfeldt) see how their friends’ lives have changed after having children - the fights, the lack of time to spend as a couple - they decide they would rather have a child with each other, and then find the loves of their lives.

Despite the reservations of their friends, their baby is born, and Jason and Julie embark on a life of idyllic parenthood, while at the same time meeting two people who they think are perfect for them. If only it was that easy.

Four of the cast members of Friends With Kids also featured in last year’s Bridesmaids. While this isn’t a continuation of that film, it does contain some of the same humour, honesty and gross-out behaviour of Bridesmaids.

The story of Jason and Julie takes centre stage, but the supporting parts are just as important. Chris O’Dowd and Maya Rudolph’s Alex and Leslie are hilarious to watch, while Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm’s couple are a rather more serious, and sometimes tragic, plot line in the film.

Westfeldt, who is in a long-term relationship with Hamm, also wrote and directed Friends With Kids, and many of the cast are friends outside of work. That leads to some amusing behind the scenes featurettes on the DVD, including two gag reels - one of the adults and one of the kids.

Friends With Kids is a romantic comedy for grown ups, devoid as it is of the fantasy perfection so often featured in many Hollywood films. Great viewing on a night in with friends, it will have you laughing, crying and sometimes just going “ew”.

And it will leave you considering that all important question: Slow, painful death by disease or watching the love of your life die a slow, painful death by disease?

• Friends With Kids is out on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 12.
