The Watling Street base has been the home for more than 100 soldiers with a range of jobs, including venue security, searchers and communications. They are all being fed by army chefs.

Craftsman Adam Johnson, 26, who lives in Dartford, said: “It’s great to be involved and it’s about doing our bit for the community as well.”

There are also more than 100 reservists based at the camp from 71 Signal Regiment, some of who might be allocated to carry out Olympic security.

Lt-Col Craig Sutherland said: “Not only is our Bexleyheath location helping to house and feed members of the military, but the regiment itself is contributing considerably.”

Members of the regiment have been and are currently on operation in Afghanistan.
