Standoff: Firefighters tackled a blaze at Keir Hardie Way

Wood Green residents have been rehomed after their roof was destroyed by 40 foot high flames.

The roof of the large house, in Stirling Way, was completely gutted by the large fire on Wednesday afternoon which also damaged a small part of a loft conversion on the next door house.

The occupants had already escaped the blaze when firefighters from Tottenham arrived on scene, shortly after they were called at 4.37pm.

All three Tottenham engines were used, as well as crews from Hornsey and Edmonton, to tackle the flames - estimated at between 40 and 50 foot high - which took an hour-and-a-half to put out.

The fire service remained on scene until 10pm.

Tottenham fire station’s John Thornton said: “We managed to save the whole of the top floor but it is going to take a lot of work to repair the damage. They need a whole new roof.”

He added the residents had been rehoused.

It is not known what the cause of the fire was, but it is not thought to be suspicious.
