Held at London Pleasure Gardens in the Royal Victoria Docks, the festival’s line-up included US rapper Snoop Dogg and legendary dance duo Orbital.

However, at around midnight on Friday the event was shut down for the duration of the weekend following advice from the police.

A statement on the festival’s website said: “We are all absolutely devastated that this happened, but the safety of everyone on site was paramount. Given the situation on the ground, we feel that it was the right decision to end the show early.”

Garfield Hackett and Debs Armstrong, co-directors of London Pleasure Gardens, said they were relieved that no injuries were suffered by festival-goers, and confirmed an inquiry into what caused the over-crowding.

“We are fully investigating what happened and will provide further information when we are in a position to do so. We thank our staff for dealing with the issue in a manner which ensured that the site was cleared safely,” they said.
