Students who are moving from primary to secondary education are getting an insight into becoming responsible adults as they grow older with classes from Bromley council’s Junior Citizen Programme.

All children in their final year of primary school take part in the events and scenarios covering personal safety and the safety of others and to make them aware of potential dangers and the consequences of criminal actions. Themes covered include mobile phone crime, road safety, train safety, drugs and alcohol education, fire safety and first aid.

Councillor Tim Stevens, the portfolio holder for public protection and safety said: “As children move on to secondary education, they are much more likely to be out and about travelling to school and facing new situations they may not have encountered before.”

He added: “Though Bromley is a very safe borough, it makes sense to be vigilant and exercise common sense around personal safety issues. The training and advice given during Junior Citizen sets the scene for our young people to grow into responsible citizens in the future.”
