The latest stage in building Crossrail’s £500 million station complex at Canary Wharf has been reached with today’s announcement of an engineering contract for all its electric and mechanical systems.
Briggs & Forrester Engineering is to install the lighting, cooling, pumping and power systems in a deal with Canary Wharf Group which is designing and building the station complex for Crossrail in the old Millwall Docks.
It will be one of the largest stations on London’s new £14m ‘super tube’, about the same size as the One Canada Square tower block laid on its side.
The lowest level was completed in March, five months ahead of schedule, ready to be connected to the tunnel boring machines next year. The station is expected to be completed in 2015, well in time for the first Crossrail trains in 2018 running direct from Canary Wharf and Whitechapel to Heathrow Airport.
Crossrail will pass through 37 stations on its 73 miles connecting Shenley and Abbey Wood in the east to Heathrow and Maidenhead in the west. It will include 13 miles of new twin-bore tunnels across central London, with trains taking just six minutes from Canary Wharf to Liverpool Street and 39 minutes to Heathrow.
