The GMB union has compiled figures, based on a survey of full time workers, which show that those in the borough are the ninth-lowest paid - in data taken from the gross average earnings of one per cent of the population.

Havering’s average is £35,595, compared to an average of £46,065 across London.

The borough’s workers earn more than the national average of £32,659 however.

Paul Hayes, GMB London secretary, said: “This survey comes at the time when the government is considering regionalising public sector pay which will lower earnings in London as many people work in the public sector.

“Local economies will suffer as everyone’s pay is dumbed down to the lowest common denominator.”

Neighbouring Barking and Dagenham has the lowest paid workers in London, according to the survey, with an average income of £28,439 in 2011.
