View Tube expo at Stratford of ‘Match Girl’ strike

06:00 16 April 2012

The final exhibition in View Tube Art’s Sparked series of events sees poet and playwright Lemn Sissay showcase his poem Spark Catchers at the venue overlooking the Olympic Stadium at Stratford.

His work references the historic 1888 strike by women workers at the Bryant and May match factory in Bow.

When they walked out in protest at their dangerous working conditions it was the first such action by non-unionised workers. The strike helped spark major improvements in workplaces across Britain.

The exhibition celebrates this inspirational story as it welcomes the Olympics.

“The Olympic Games reflect who we are. It seems natural that our story, our struggles and our victories as nations of the world are exemplified within and around this peerless event,” said Lemn.

The free exhibition runs from May 16, from 10am to 3pm.

Free family art workshops inspired by the exhibition takes place on Saturday at View Tube, on The Greenway, Marshgate Lane, from 10.30am to noon and 1pm to 2.30pm
