A Chislehurst cemetery is the new home to the remains of 330 bodies which were excavated by a railway company.

Network Rail dug up the remains as part of the Thameslink programme around Borough Market in south-east London last year.

Most of the remains dated from the early 19th century. A memorial, opened on Monday, has been erected in the form of an obelisk and a service was held at Southwark Cathedral in June.

The cathedral joined forces with funeral directors Albin and Sons to decide where the remains should be reburied. They settled on Kemnal Park on the Sidcup by-pass.

Barry Albin-Dyer, chairman of the firm, said: “Kemnal Park have made us very welcome. This is a brand new cemetery so to have more than 200 years of history when they open is quite special.”
