Boy, 16, detained after Hackney shooting

A teenager has been detained for eight years for his involvement in a shoot out on the Pembury Estate in Hackney.

Miles Thomas Addy, 16, was seen on CCTV exchanging fire with two males on bikes on January 31 this year.

After earlier admitting to possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life, he was sentenced yesterday at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

The court heard officers went to the scene after residents described hearing gunfire and seeing a male frantically trying to get into Pembury Close immediately after the incident.

A dozen bullet casings were uncovered after a search, while several vehicles were found to be damaged. One stray bullet also smashed a window and lodged in the bedroom wall of a nearby property.

After examining video footage, it was found that a “shoot out” had taken place between a youth later identified as Addy and two males on bikes.

The next day, Addy, of Pembury Close, was arrested at a flat in Willoughby Road in Ipswich. He was charged with firearms offences.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Amy Trencher, said: “This conviction demonstrates to gang members and especially juveniles that regardless of their age, background or sex, Trident Gang Crime Command will pursue all lines of enquiry to bring those responsible to justice.

“Our experience and research shows that gang members often think they will get status, protection, a sense of identity and financial gain - they are wrong.

“The reality is that the gang member is more likely to be injured or imprisoned.

“We will always act upon information given to us about those involved in gang-related criminal activity and will hold to account those who choose to carry weapons and who are involved in gang violence.”
