Karen Williamson, 46, used a hammer and also a heavy glass jug to attack 86-year-old Jean Jobson in Downham, south-east London.

Evidence suggested that widow Mrs Jobson, who was known locally as Pat, had been strangled as well.

A tea towel draped over a fireplace in the lounge suggested efforts had been made to burn down the house in which she lived.

Junkie Williamson murdered Mrs Jobson after being hired by her to carry out gardening chores. The pair fell out in a dispute over unfinished work.

After carrying out the catastrophic attack which caused the collapse of Mrs Jobson’s skull, Williamson stole jewellery which she sold at a pawn shop for just £61.

Williamson was given a life sentence and told she will spend a minimum of 24 years in prison.

Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons said: “Pat Jobson was a popular and well loved member of the community.

“Her violent death caused shock and disbelief and many wondered why a lone and vulnerable woman would be attacked in this way. Karen Williamson, a drug user killed Pat for a measly £61.

“I am pleased with the sentence she has received today and hope that this is some comfort to Pat’s family who have been left devastated by her murder.”
