Man cleared of 1999 Tottenham murder

A murder suspect accused of stabbing a father-of-two to death in a Tottenham underpass 13 years ago was cleared today after the prosecution dropped the case.

Kwame Appiah, 36, was due to stand trial at the Old Bailey in September after he was charged with the killing of 30-year-old David Scott in the early hours of the morning on August 24, 1999.

Mr Scott - who grew up in Northumberland Park - was found collapsed in Monument Way, near an underpass on the A10 where he had been stabbed. He was pronounced dead in hospital an hour later.

At the time of his death, Mr Scott’s children with his girlfriend were aged just two-and-a-half and 11-months-old.

Appiah, of Gleave Court, Denham Road, Barnet, was arrested last December in connection with the killing, but today prosecutor Duncan Atkinson announced the Crown were dropping the case.

He told the court that scientific evidence backed up Appiah’s assertion that he was not responsible for Mr Scott’s death.
