A cold case review has led to the conviction of a man who raped a woman in her Haringey home 22 years ago.
Milton White was given a 12 year sentence for rape and burglary at the Old Bailey earlier today after his DNA and palm print was matched to those found at the scene of the assault in May 1990.
White, now 46, was in his 20s when he raped the then 60-year-old woman in the early hours of the morning after breaking into her Haringey home.
The victim - who woke up to discover White in her bedroom - challenged him, but he placed his hand over her mouth and raped her.
After he attacked her, White rifled through her clothes and made off with £1,200 - which was most of around £1,500 the victim had won at a Mayfair casino earlier that evening.
One White had gone, she raised the alarm with neighbours and police were contacted but, in spite of extensive enquiries at the time, the suspect could not be identified.
It was only when the case was handed to the Cold Case Sapphire Team that a DNA match to White was achieved, while a fingerprint review also found a palm mark attributed to the defendant at the scene.
White, of Albany Road, Camberwell, was finally arrested at Southwark Police Station in November 2010 on suspicion of rape - more than 20 years after the incident took place.
After a “no-comment” interview, being fingerprinted and having his DNA taken, White was charged with rape and burglary culminating in his sentencing.
But while it was a good result for the cold case team, his victim sadly did not live to see White convicted as she died in 2006.
The cold case team’s DC Andy Beete said: “I am pleased with today’s result and would like to highlight the hard work of all those involved in bringing White to justice. It is deeply sad that the victim is no longer with us, but I hope her family are able to take some comfort in today’s result.
“If anyone believes they may have been a victim of White’s I would ask them to contact the Cold Case Team on 020 7161 1034.”
